Following the inauguration of a new building in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Station 3 of the Manila Police District will have its own parking lot, with the City Council’s passage last Thursday, 30 November 2023, of an ordinance withdrawing a nearby 186-square meter land from public use.
Jointly authored by Third District Councilors Johanna Maureen “Apple” C. Nieto-Rodriguez and Terrence F. Alibarbar, the ordinance makes the lot available for the station’s exclusive use as a parking space, complementing the new structure which was a project sponsored by then Congressman and now Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” Nieto.
The new precinct building has an elevator, an in-house firing range, and a gym, among other amenities.
“Manila’s crime prevention program has been strengthened with the inauguration of Police Station 3, with a sufficient parking space that will allow the police to act swiftly in cases of emergency”, said Nieto in her sponsorship speech.
Alibarbar, for his part, recalled that the old police station was located in an alley and was hardly visible to the public. “The new location is adjacent to a popular mall in Manila and is now more convenient for the police force and the public”, he remarked.
Under the Local Government Code of 1991, a property withdrawn from public use “may be used or conveyed for any purpose for which other real property belonging to the local unit concerned might be lawfully used or conveyed”. Once so withdrawn, the property can be the object of an ordinary contract.
