Mindful of the role social media plays in enhancing public service and community relations, the Manila City Council adopted a resolution urging all barangays in the city to establish and maintain their official social media accounts, accessible to constituents on a 24/7 basis. Authored by Councilor Numero “Uno” Lim of the Second District, the resolution was passed swiftly by the Council at a regular session held on Thursday, 23 November 2023, sans objection from any member.

These official accounts can be a good source of news and information about barangay events and services”, remarked Lim on the sidelines of the session. “They provide an efficient forum for community dialogue, as well as requests, complaints, and feedback from residents”, added Lim.

The resolution also calls on relevant offices, such as the Manila Barangay Bureau, to provide the support necessary for barangays to establish their presence on social media, including proper training on content management.

Social media refers to a variety of interactive technologies that facilitate the sharing of ideas, interests, and other forms of expression among users. 4.7 billion people, roughly 60% of the world’s population, use social media, among the most popular platforms of which are Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and YouTube.
