At a regular session held last Thursday, 16 November 2023, the City Council of Manila adopted two resolutions accrediting the Samar G Tuazon Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association (SGT TODA), Inc. and the  Associates of Urban Poor, Inc. (AUPI) as a people’s organization and non-governmental organization, respectively. Both organizations are based in Manila and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

SGT TODA “envisions to develop cooperation, assistance, harmony, and understanding among its members to advance their economic and social wellbeing”, while AUPI “works with urban poor communities and stakeholders to attain land tenure, housing, and basic services”, said the two resolutions authored by Fifth District Councilor Ricardo “Boy” Isip Jr.

The passage of the resolutions brought to 100 the total number of people’s and non-governmental organizations accredited by Council since its term started in June 2022. Under Section 34 of the Local Government Code, local government units are mandated to promote the “establishment and operation of people’s and nongovernmental organizations, to become active partners in the pursuit of local autonomy”.
