In line with this year’s observance of World Diabetes Day, with the theme: “Access to Diabetes Care”, the City Council of Manila, passed on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, a resolution for the prevention and management of the disease.

Introduced by First District Councilor Irma C. Alfonso-Juson, the resolution emphasizes the importance of having equitable access to the needed care and information, in order to guarantee proper management, prevention, and treatment of diabetes. It encourages the public to participate in the city government’s activities aimed at raising awareness about the disease and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Earlier on the same day, 7,418 senior high school students from 25 public schools in the city took part in blood sugar tests and pre-diabetic screening administered by the Manila Health Department.

World Diabetes Day is observed globally every 14th of November, coinciding with the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a Canadian physician and Nobel laureate who co-discovered insulin, along with compatriot Charles Best, in 1922.
