Mindful of the need to correct misconceptions and increase the people’s understanding about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the City Council of Manila approved a resolution declaring the month of October as ADHD Awareness Month in Manila.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder which causes unusual levels of hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors. Persons experiencing the condition usually have a hard time focusing attention on a single task or sitting still for long periods of time, per the resolution introduced by Councilor Johanna Maureen “Apple” Nieto-Rodriguez.
The resolution calls on citizens of Manila to help raise awareness of ADHD by using hashtags such as #ADHDAwareness, #ADHD, #ADHDsupport, and #EndTheStigma on social media.
“Sana po ay suportahan natin ang resolusyong ito, bilang bahagi ng isang holistic mental health program, at upang mapawi din ang stigma na dulot ng pagkakaroon ng ADHD. (I hope we all support this resolution, which is part of a holistic mental health program, and also to remove the stigma caused by having ADHD),” the Third District Councilor exhorted her colleagues in her sponsorship speech.
