Miss Manila is an homage to the Manila Carnival, which was held annually during the American colonial period, in order to showcase the country’s industries and celebrate Philippine-American relations. The Carnival was highlighted by the crowning of the Carnival Queens, deemed the precursor of various national pageants in the Philippines.
Last held in 2018, Miss Manila was relaunched this year by the administration of Mayor Maria Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna-Pangan as part of the 452nd Araw ng Maynila festivities. The contest featured 20 young Manileñas promoting women empowerment, under the theme “Women of Worth”.
The grand coronation night took place at the Metropolitan Theater last 23 June, hosted by actor Rayver Cruz and 2018 Miss Universe Catriona Gray. It was broadcast on GMA 7 two days later on 25 June.
